Founding
FRC Team 7902 and the associated not-for-profit were founded by a few students from Markham District High School.
Team 7902, the Markham FireBirds, is a community-based FIRST Robotics Competition team from Markham, Ontario. Read a bit about our recent history or start at the bottom.
Four years after our first attempt to build an arm, the 2023 season marked the successful design of a 5-foot long telescoping robot arm. This bot competed at the Newmarket Sports Complex and Western University Events.
By the end of the qualifiers round, our team had ranked 28th in the province and attended our first-ever Provincial Championships, where we ranked 29 (of 67). We hope to be back next year!
We came out of the pandemic better than ever before. For the first time, we were a team that could hold its own in competition, winning the Humber College Event with 2200 and 5409, seeding 3rd at York University, and earning Excellence in Engineering at that same event.
With support from FIRST Canada, we ran a week of online summer camps with Moorelands Kids, where we taught the basics of computer-aided design.
While competitions were not running, we took a season to develop internally. Recruiting new members and training online with CAD and coding set us up for a successful season back.
With no end to the pandemic in sight FIRST Canada released the Recharge Your Bot Challenges, which teams could work on while adhering to public safety guidelines. Our team earned 3rd place in the Sprint Challenge using our minibot.
We partnered with the Ontario PPE Collective to produce components for over 300 face shields, which were delivered to frontline workers across Ontario.
We were back for a second season, Infinite Recharge! At the Durham College event, we ranked 18/36 teams, a major improvement from 2019. Unfortunately, the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team took part in events around Markham, including Markham Public Library's Digital Literacy Week, Science Rendezvous, and Box Grove Plaza Palooza. This marked the start of regular outreach where we would demo our bot and get the community excited about science and technology.
Our 2019 competitions were are Humber College and Georgian College. While it might have not been the first season we envisioned when we founded the team, it was one that would go on to shape the team's future for the better. We came away with plenty of lessons learned and renewed ambition for the future.
Our first-ever competition robot! Originally we had tried to build an arm, but ran into some technical challenges. Thanks to quick pivoting and dedicated members, we managed to put together a fast, lightweight bot.
For our first season's Kickoff, we were invited to Crescent School by Team 610. In addition to watching the Kickoff livestream, we had the opportunity to attend training sessions and receive assistance building our first robot drivetrain.
The team began a long-term sponsorship arrangement with Sable Metal Fabrication Inc., a local manufacturer of laser-cut and precisely bent sheet metal parts. Sable continues to be an invaluable part of every robot we design and build.
